Chá de Erva Mate, also known as Yerba Mate tea, is a traditional South American beverage with numerous health benefits. This tea is made from the leaves of the Ilex paraguariensis plant and has gained popularity worldwide for its energizing and antioxidant properties. In this article, we will guide you on how to make Chá de Erva Mate at home.

Step 1: Gather the Ingredients

To make Chá de Erva Mate, you will need the following ingredients:

  1. 3 tablespoons of loose-leaf or powdered Erva Mate
  2. Hot water
  3. A cup or a traditional gourd (cuia) with a bombilla (metal straw)

Step 2: Prepare the Gourd (Cuia)

If you are using a traditional gourd to drink your Chá de Erva Mate, you need to prepare it before making the tea. Follow these steps:

  1. Fill the gourd with hot water and let it sit for a few minutes.
  2. Empty the water and gently scrape the insides of the gourd with a spoon to remove any loose debris.
  3. Rinse the gourd thoroughly with cold water.
  4. Let the gourd dry completely.

Step 3: Heat the Water

Boil the water in a kettle or a pot until it reaches a temperature of around 160°F (70°C). Chá de Erva Mate should not be brewed with boiling water as it may alter the taste and nutritional properties of the tea.

Step 4: Measure and Add the Erva Mate

If you are using loose-leaf Erva Mate, measure 3 tablespoons of it and place it in your gourd. For powdered Erva Mate, use 1 tablespoon.

Step 5: Pour the Hot Water

Slowly pour the hot water (160°F/70°C) into the gourd, covering the Erva Mate. Let it steep for a few minutes to allow the flavors to infuse.

Step 6: Position the Bombilla and Sip

Insert the bombilla (metal straw) into the gourd until it reaches the bottom. Tilt the gourd slightly to create a small pocket of dry Erva Mate at the top. Place your lips around the filtered end of the bombilla and sip the tea, allowing the metal filter to separate the leaves from the liquid.

Step 7: Refill and Enjoy

You can refill your gourd several times with hot water before the tea loses its flavor. To refill, simply pour hot water into the gourd and repeat the steeping process. Chá de Erva Mate can be enjoyed throughout the day.

Now that you know how to make Chá de Erva Mate, you can experience the unique taste and benefits of this traditional South American tea in the comfort of your own home. Grab your gourd, prepare the ingredients, and start brewing your own refreshing cup of Chá de Erva Mate!
