How to Make Chá Mate: A Step-by-Step Guide

Chá Mate, also known as Mate tea, is a traditional South American drink that is gaining popularity all over the world for its unique flavor and numerous health benefits. Made from the leaves of the Yerba Mate plant, Chá Mate is rich in antioxidants, vitamins, and minerals. If you are curious to try this energizing beverage, here is a step-by-step guide on how to make Chá Mate at home.

1. Start with the right materials:

Before you begin, make sure you have the necessary materials. You will need:

- 2-3 tablespoons of loose leaf Yerba Mate

- A gourd or a cup

- A bombilla (a metal straw with a filter at one end)

- Hot water

2. Prepare the gourd:

If you are using a gourd (a traditional vessel for drinking Mate), it is important to prepare it properly. Pour some hot water into the gourd and let it sit for a few minutes. This will help to cure the gourd and remove any impurities.

3. Add the Yerba Mate:

Fill the gourd halfway with Yerba Mate leaves. While adding the leaves, gently shake the gourd to ensure that the smaller particles settle at the bottom.

4. Create a mountain:

Add hot water to the gourd until it covers the leaves. Wait for a few seconds to allow the leaves to soak up the water. Then, use the bombilla to gently push the leaves to one side of the gourd, creating a mountain of dry leaves on the other side.

5. Insert the bombilla:

Now, it's time to insert the bombilla. Place the filtered end of the bombilla into the mountain of leaves, making sure it touches the bottom of the gourd. This will prevent the bombilla from clogging with the leaves while you drink.

6. Pour hot water:

Pour hot water (avoid boiling water) into the empty side of the gourd, gradually wetting the dry leaves. The water should be around 70-80 degrees Celsius. Be careful not to pour the water directly onto the bombilla.

7. Enjoy your Chá Mate:

Once the water has been poured, wait for a few seconds to let the leaves steep. Then, bring the gourd close to your mouth, and sip through the bombilla. As you drink, the bombilla's filter will prevent you from ingesting the leaves. Take your time to enjoy the unique flavor of Chá Mate.
